BRIEF
Design a mask for adults, with asthma or respiratory diseases that is attractive for people having an active lifestyle

APPROACH
The Norwegian Asthma- and Allergy Association sought to improve their current asthma masks and had several requirements for their future masks. To determine the most appropriate direction, we conducted a thorough analysis of the entire user journey, including multiple user interviews and the identification of common issues. We then engaged in an extensive process of mockup creation, testing, and iteration to ensure that the final solution met the real needs of users while also addressing the specific desires of our client.

With the above in mind, we pinpointed the following as the most significant goals:

The mask should be adjustable to fit various head shapes and sizes.
The filter in the mask should be removable to allow for separate cleaning.
The ears should not be subjected to irritation or discomfort when the mask is worn for an extended period.
The mask should come with a designated container for storage when not in use.
The mask should be attractive to users who aim to prevent asthma and should be perceived as an accessory rather than an aid, similar to glasses.
Before making the final prototype we went through a long process of mockups, testing and numerous iterations to assure that the final solution could live up to the real user needs. We made sure to have our client's wishes in focus all the way.
SOLUTION
The resulting design, named Luftig, is a black, minimalistic mask that can be paired with the user’s personal choice of accesso- ries. To improve the fit and appearance of the mask, we included two rectangular filters, which can be easily removed for cleaning.
In order to spare the ears we the mask’s closing mechanism utilizes an oval support that allows for a secure fit with just one “click,” and the mask can be adjusted on both sides of the head.
The mask is made primarily of Merino wool, which is known
for its softness and ability to regulate body temperature and eliminate odors. Inside, we added a thin layer of padding to give the mask a natural fit along the face, making it comfortable to wear even during physical activity. The mask comes with a small bag that can be used for storage and washing.
